Boowinda Gorge Walk is the perfect place to spend the day exploring. Bring along a picnic or barbecue and take in the landscape that surrounds you.

The eroding sandstone walls are carved into amazing shapes by extreme flows of water from previous flash floods.

This is the perfect place to visit on a hot day. Take a short climb through towering spotted gum which leads past the lower falls and further into the shaded canyon. Here you can spend some time in this naturally cool spot while watching the water trickle down the rocks.

Did you know? Wards Canyon is home to the world’s largest fern; the king fern Angiopteris evecta.

As a result of severe weather damage Wards Canyon walk is closed until declared safe, effective 24 April 2025 to 31 January 2026.

Discover the natural architecture that was created over tens of thousands of years by running water off the main gorge track.

You will scale a tiered ladder and walk through a narrow crevice revealing a 60m chasm hidden deep inside the gorge. You will feel like you’ve just stepped into another world.

Prepare yourself for a 4 hour walk. As it tends to get quite humid walking through the gorge, we suggest bringing water and snacks.

The Moss Gardens walk veers from the main track and continues for 650m. Follow the boardwalk to a haven of rainforest, moss-covered rocks and soaring cliffs. It is recommended to spend a while here to cool off before tackling the return journey.

The Cathedral Cave trail is 18.2km return along the main gorge from the Carnarvon Gorge Visitor Centre. This trail is worth the distance as you get to enjoy the largest and most spectacular cultural site off the main gorge track. This massive, wind-eroded overhang sheltered Aboriginal people for thousands of years. Don’t forget to pack a camera to capture the paintings, stencils and engravings covering the sheer white sandstone walls.
